Are you still waiting to feel motivated so you can train?

Argh! You know that feeling when you just can’t be bothered to train?!?

You don’t understand why you’re not more motivated to exercise and it simply feels like a chore.

I’m going to be really honest now- 70% of the time I don’t feel like training. BUT, I do it anyways. At least most of the time.

Unfortunately, motivation is not reliable, hence why we can’t count on feeling motivated to get our training done.

“I just want to feel motivated again”. This is the statement I hear most frequently when a client wants to get back into training or commit to something else in life.

Think of motivation as a wave. It comes and goes but it’s never stable. In order to stop feeling bad about yourself that you’re not feeling motivated you must let go of the concept that motivation is always there and available.

First of all, you can definitely do certain things to increase your motivation. These include:

  • Goal setting
  • Creating a vision
  • Aligning your life with your values
  • Making priorities
  • Doing something that excites you

BUT- the real game changer is DISCIPLINE.

I understand that it’s sometimes hard to be disciplined with your training or other things in life, but fact is that when we don’t necessarily want to do something discipline (and integrity with yourself: “I do what I say”) becomes your best friend.

How can you become more motivated/ disciplined?

  • Work on your motivation but acknowledge that motivation comes and goes
  • Treat commitments to yourself like an absolute non-negotiable (integrity)
  • Book what you’re committing to in your diary like an appointment with your boss
  • Evaluate your values and priorities!
  • Where else in your life are you already disciplined? How can you apply that discipline to your training?
